Introduction to Marbling

Experience the magic of marbling! Learn the basic process of marbling with acrylics, including recipes for the various components of the process. Make four basic patterns (stones, moire/waved, git-gel, and nonpareil), explore seasonal color palettes, and take home your own marbled papers ready to use in bookbinding and other arts.

Transit Options

Bus: MCBA is located on Metro Transit bus routes 7 and 22. The nearest stop is at Washington Ave. S. and 11th St., just down the block from Open Book’s front doors.

Rail: We are located five blocks east of the Downtown East/US Bank Stadium light rail station.

Bicycle: Bike racks are available at the front of the building along Washington Ave., as well as at the rear entrance of the building.


Parking Information

Limited free parking is available in the Open Book lot adjacent to the building. Please do not park in spaces reserved for building tenants or staff.

Events in the building may limit the availability of spaces in the Open Book lot. Metered street parking, pay lots and public ramps are all available nearby. Stadium events can affect parking availability in our neighborhood. Parking meters are typically active until 10 pm; read the signs carefully.

Reserved handicapped parking spaces are located near both the front and rear entrances to the building.

THE 25TH ART-A-WHIRL®

Art-A-Whirl® is the largest open studio tour in the country, happening annually throughout Northeast Minneapolis on the third weekend of May. View artwork of nearly 800 artists in every medium at more than 60 locations, including studio buildings, art galleries, homes, storefronts, and local businesses. The artists’ open studio tours may include demonstrations, mini-workshops, installations, and special exhibitions. Studio tours offer a great opportunity to ask questions, discuss techniques, experience art first-hand, and purchase unique artwork directly from the artists who make our community so vibrant!

This event is free and open to the public.

2020 Dates and Hours:

Friday, May 15th – 5:00-10:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 16th – Noon-8:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 17th – Noon-5:00 p.m.

Large tank 1 to 1 Open Studio!

Bring your scarves, large pieces of fabric or paper or edition work to marble on a large marbling tank, 32” wide x 68” long.

HRJ Design Studios provides tools (stylist and combs), 12 gallons of carrageenan, newsprint, paints, eyedroppers, whisks, a hanging line for drying pieces, assistance in laying down fabric or paper on the bath and help throughout marbling process.

You: Yourself, pre-alumed paper or fabric

Cost - $40.00 per hour, 2-hour minimum. Registration on a first-come, first-serve basis.

House Keeping- Registration closes 1 week before. Payment must be received in full upon registration. To register email - here

Take your marbling skills to a new level! In this two-day workshop, learn to make newly-designed, contemporary patterns. Explore how to over marble with intention. Learn to use new combs with different spacing. Inspired by traditional marbling, these patterns bring a familiar but fresh take on a centuries-old art form.
